Prozac (generic name: fluoxetine) works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, that studies have shown helps maintain mental balance. It is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, some eating disorders, and panic attacks. Usage during pregnancy, however, may cause medication birth defects.

Prozac During Pregnancy
Prozac is in a class of antidepressants called SSRIs – selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Generally safe and effective for you, SSRIs are known teratogens: substances that cause birth defects in children of mothers exposed during pregnancy. The manufacturer of your medication might be held responsible for those injuries.
Prozac and Autism
A recent study showed a greater risk for autism in children who were exposed to SSRIs early in pregnancy (first trimester). If your child has been diagnosed with autism, and you took Prozac in pregnancy, find out more about Prozac and autism.
Prozac birth defects may be costly to treat. Some may be very difficult to treat at all. We have a Prozac lawyer who may be able to help you with a Prozac lawsuit. Call our Nurses’ Desk today – or submit the form to initiate a call from them.
