Diacetyl Linked to Lung Disease & Respiratory Problems

Diacetyl is a toxic flavoring chemical used to mimic the taste, texture, and smell of butter. It is used as an ingredient in flavoring “recipes” to artificially flavor foods and beverages. It is also used for common flavors (e.g. caramel) of the liquid used in e-cigarette devices, referred to as vaping juice or e-juice.

Exposure to diacetyl can cause bronchiolitis obliterans, a deadly lung disease also known as “Popcorn Lung” because it was first widely reported in workers making microwave popcorn. However, this disease has been diagnosed in people working in other kinds of flavor manufacturing, food manufacturing, coffee roasting, and animal feed production.

Those who work in factories where this chemical is used are most at risk for developing bronchiolitis obliterans and other lung problems. In addition, individuals who have used e-cigarettes or “vaped” may also be at risk. Often misdiagnosed as asthma or COPD, early symptoms of the disease may include:

  • Difficulty breathing or sleeping
