Volkswagen Sets Aside $7.2 Billion for Claims Arising from Diesel Emissions Scandal

In September 2015, Volkswagen (VW) admitted to deceiving consumers by intentionally installing “cheating” software in certain vehicles to pass emissions tests. Volkswagen is now setting aside more than $7.2 Billion to cover potential claims from owners of the affected vehicles. How Volkswagen Deceived Consumers

Volkswagen has marketed its “CleanDiesel” vehicles as environmentally-friendly, possessing high fuel efficiency and performance with very low emissions. In reality, the company was lying to customers by using software known as “defeat devices” to violate clean air standards.

Defeat devices work by turning on the full emissions control systems only when the car is undergoing periodic emissions testing. Once the test is done, the emissions control system shuts off and the car can emit up to 40 times more nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution than is allowed under federal law during normal use.
