At least one person was killed and dozens more were injured on Thursday, September 13, 2018 after gas line explosions stunned three towns just north of Boston. Reports state there were multiple explosions, with more than 80 homes impacted by fire damage.
Earlier on Thursday, local gas company Columbia Gas of Massachusetts informed customers that it was "upgrading natural gas lines in neighborhoods across the state."
According to a letter from Massachusetts U.S. senators to executives of Columbia Gas, the pressure in the natural gas pipelines prior to the explosions and fires was 12 times higher than it should have been.
"The federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has reported that the pressure in the Columbia Gas system should have been around 0.5 pounds per square inch (PSI), but readings in the area reached at least 6 PSI — twelve times higher than the system was intended to hold."
The explosions are currently being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
