A birth injury can be any type of injury that occurs during pregnancy, labor and delivery or shortly after childbirth. Approximately seven out of 1,000 babies in the United States are injured during labor and delivery. Birth injuries can vary in severity and often times are preventable. Unfortunately, in some cases a birth injury is the result of a medical mistake made by a doctor or hospital staff during the birthing process.
Some of the more common birth injuries include:
- Cerebral palsy
- Erb’s Palsy (also called Brachial Plexus Palsy)
- Skull fracturing
- Facial-nerve damage
- Bleeding or lack of oxygen in the brain (Hypoxic-ischemic Encephalopathy HIE)
