Testosterone Therapy May Cause Stroke, Heart Attack, or Death

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning men about the potential increased risk of heart attack and stroke linked to the use of testosterone replacement drugs. The FDA cautions that prescription testosterone products are approved only for men who have low testosterone levels caused by certain medical conditions and that the benefit and safety of these drugs have not been established for the treatment of low testosterone levels due to aging.

The makers of all prescription testosterone products are now required to include a warning on the drug label about the risk of heart attack and stroke. The FDA has also stressed that clinical trials are needed to better understand the effects of testosterone therapy.

What is Low T?

Testosterone is a naturally occurring male sex hormone. As men age, their production of the hormone decreases, resulting in low testosterone levels, also known as “Low-T”.

More than 2.3 million American men, most between the ages of 40 and 64, are prescribed testosterone replacement therapy to combat some common symptoms of aging, such as low libido, fatigue, depression, increased body fat, and decreased muscle mass.

Unfortunately, the use of these dangerous products is on the rise as a result of aggressive marketing tactics by makers of “Low-T” drugs. Testosterone replacement products come in various forms, including transdermal gels, creams, pellets, patches, and injections.  Some popular brand names include:

  • Androgel®
  • Androderm®
  • Axiron®
  • Delatestryl®
  • Fortesta®
  • Striant®
  • Testim®

Is Testosterone Therapy Worth the Risk?

Current research shows that among older men, taking testosterone increased the likelihood of stroke, heart attack, or death . Despite these potential side effects, selling “Low-T” products is a multi-billion dollar market for drug companies.

Testosterone replacement drugs have been linked to dangerous side effects such as:

  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Blood Clots
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Death
